A new work for family audiences
A new work for family audiences
Little Blue Dot’ will be a large-scale puppetry and performance work for family audiences tackling some of the world’s greatest questions about existence, our place in the universe and the philosophical questions we must face as a species in the face of climate change. It is being developed in collaboration with Monash University
Astronomer Carl Sagan, from whom the name of this work is drawn, said in his famous publication ‘Pale Blue Dot’, “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.” ‘Little Blue Dot’ takes these themes and scientific concepts and explores them theatrically using puppetry and performance. We create a sense of wonder about our place in the universe but also drill down into why it is so vital for Earth to remain a healthy and vibrant planet. It is a bold proposition – especially for a work for children but so often, we do not give enough credit to children to understanding deep philosophical questions and yet, by about aged 4-5, most children understand the finality of death and thus begin to question life and its meaning. We need to give them space to ask these questions and to think deeply on the ‘answers’ – if we can provide them.
This work is being made in collaboration with Monash University researchers from The School of Physics and Astronomy and Monash Performing Arts Centres.
’Little Blue Dot’ will premiere at the Alexander Theatre at Monash University in July 2024 and Geelong Arts Centre during September 2024 and is being produced by Lauren Eisinger Productions and will premiere in April 2024.
